It may seem as if everyone is undergoing plastic surgery these days with its recent increase in popularity. The most favored procedures – breast augmentation, facelifts, and liposuction – all share one common goal. They all seek to create an improved look for the patient while conforming to our society's standards of physical appearance. Are these procedures really in the client's best interests, or are they just a product of today's unrealistic body ideals? The following section lists some of the benefits of cosmetic surgery that you might not have considered.

Plastic Surgery Benefits

The primary benefit of plastic surgery is the improvement to the person's physical appearance, which is also the primary reason for undergoing surgery. However, providing an improvement in appearance is only one of many possible benefits plastic surgery presents. If you have been thinking of undergoing a plastic surgery procedure, here are a few of the advantages you might stand to gain from your decision:

Increased Self-Confidence

You feel good about yourself when you know you look good. Making improvements to your appearance naturally translates to increased confidence and self-esteem for the majority of people. Greater self-confidence can provide a greater willingness to try new things or open up in social situations. You may also be able to wear certain types of clothing or participate in activities you tended to avoid before surgery, due to self-consciousness regarding your appearance.

Improved Physical Health

Some plastic surgery procedures are two-fold in that they can improve your looks while improving an aspect of your physical health. For instance, rhinoplasty may improve your ability to breath at the same time it improves the physical appearance of your nose. Breast reduction surgery improves the shape of the bust line and chest proportions, but it may also relieve physical discomforts, such as neck and back pain from disproportionately large breasts.

Enhanced Mental Health

Plastic surgery can provide mental health benefits as well. Some people experience a decrease in social anxiety after their surgery because of the newly gained self-confidence their new look creates. Many people report feeling greater control over their lives, greater willingness to take on new challenges, or the ability to take charge of their lives in a whole new way.

More Opportunities

Some studies suggest that people who are more physically attractive find themselves with more personal and professional opportunities. In addition, other studies have found that more physically attractive people get chosen for promotion more often and tend to make higher salaries.

Extra Weight Stays Off

Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight may find it is easier to keep the weight off after undergoing a body contouring procedure, such as liposuction or a tummy tuck. The positive results of the procedure often act as motivation for the person to maintain a healthier lifestyle in order to regulate their weight. A healthier number on the scale can also lead to better overall health and reduced risk for some types of disease.

People consider plastic surgery for many different reasons today. After a successful surgery, you may also experience benefits from your procedure that you never considered. What Is The Difference Between Cosmetic And Reconstructive Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a division of plastic surgery that allows people to reshape and change the structure of their body and facial appearance to improve something that they do not like or something they wish to enhance. Since cosmetic surgery procedures are not often medically necessary, there is rarely health insurance coverage for any of the costs involved.

Reconstructive surgery is another division of plastic surgery designed to correct issues, deformities, and flaws related to one’s physical appearance that may have been sustained through congenital defect, disease, injury or trauma. Reconstructive surgeries are performed in an effort to restore or improve the function of physical structures in addition to normalizing a person's outward appearance. The majority of health insurance policies provide some amount of coverage for the costs involved with reconstructive surgery, but the amount will vary between policies.

When it comes to insurance coverage, insurance companies do not often have a concrete definition for which procedures are considered reconstructive versus cosmetic. For instance, eyelid surgery may be covered by insurance if the person’s eyelids are considered irregular, causing the person to have vision problems and, therefore, fixing such a problem would be considered reconstructive in nature. The same insurance policy may not provide any coverage, however, if the exact same procedure is performed electively, in order to simply augment the person’s appearance.
