Vaser liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that combines ultrasound treatment with traditional liposuction. It is designed to permanently remove the fatty tissue between the skin and the muscle layers, and is an excellent option to help contour the body by removing excess pockets of fat.
An ultrasound device is inserted into the fat to break up the fat cells and separate them away from the surrounding tissue, which allows more fat to be removed in a much more efficient way and with less discomfort. It also helps to enhance skin contraction once swelling has resolved.
It is ideal in patients with an overall healthy body weight (BMI less than 35) that have mild to moderate fat pockets, such as “love handles” or “double chins” for example. Vaser liposuction is not a good weight loss strategy, however, as it cannot remove fatty tissue beneath the muscle, which is referred to as visceral fat. That is why it is important to enter a liposuction procedure at a stable and healthy weight, in order to get the best outcome.
Similar to traditional liposuction, Vaser liposuction requires about 1-2 weeks of initial down time, and most individuals are able to return to full activity by 4 weeks. They may experience less bruising, swelling, and discomfort compared to traditional liposuction, and may also experience better skin contraction as well.
The incisions from this procedure are very small and well hidden. A compression garment is recommended for 6 weeks after the procedure to encourage swelling to resolve and to maximize the aesthetic results.
