If you desire a different size or type of breast implant or have problems related to prior breast implant placement, revision breast surgery may be required. Over time some people form scar tissue, also called capsules, around their breast implants. This can cause distortion of the breast, discomfort, and the breasts can feel hard. Removing this scar tissue (capsulectomy) or surgically releasing the scar tissue (capsulotomy) can restore breasts that are soft and symmetrical and appear more natural. Other issues such as implant rippling and implant rupture may also be improved with revision surgery. Most of the time incisions can be kept within the original scars. Depending upon the age of the original implants, it may be advisable to exchange them with new implants.
