Conventional weight loss regimens, exercise, and healthy living may not be sufficient to remove fat deposits in certain parts of the body. Liposuction removes undesirable excess fat deposits from isolated areas such as the hips, flanks, abdomen, thighs, knees, calves, face, neck, and arms. Liposuction is most successful in people with good skin tone who are near normal weight but have localized fatty deposits. It is not a treatment for obesity. It is intended to produce a more flattering figure by improving contours and proportions. When performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon, it is safe and effective. The procedure is performed through small incisions into which a cannula is inserted to remove the fatty deposits. Prior to suctioning, an injection of anesthetic solution is used to provide post operative pain relief and reduce bleeding. Several areas can be suctioned in one operative setting although your surgeon may limit the amount that can be removed safely at one time. A compression garment is worn for several weeks following surgery to minimize fluid accumulation and facilitate healing.
